Founder Thomas J. Dunkel (1847-1926) spent his early years in Bellefonte, Pa. and was elected as the Centre County Sheriff in 1881 to 1884. Following
an appointment by President Cleveland as the 19th district Revenue Collector he moved to Bell Township in Jefferson County with his wife Elizabeth and
three boys, Robert, Malcolm and Fred. In 1896, from the back of a horse drawn wagon with ladders on the side boards, they started a business painting
bridges and roofs. By 1916 they moved to 307 Greenwood Ave. Punxsutawney, Pa. where they continued to expand the roofing business and it is still in
After the death of Thomas' son Robert (1887-1909) in a hunting accident, his other sons' Malcolm Byard Dunkel Sr. (1890-1977) and Fred F. Dunkel soon
took over the family business. Fred became ill at age 40 with multiple sclerosis in 1930 but continued to help with the business till his death in 1944. M.B.
Dunkel Sr. was now the sole owner of Dunkel Roofing Co. He and his wife Alma (Daisher) had three children, two daughters and one son Malcolm Byard
Dunkel Jr. born in 1930 (aka Bud). Bud Jr. graduated from Penn State University. and served as a jet pilot in the air force until his dad retired from the
roofing business in 1956, at which time Jr. took over. By now the company had become a household name in the Punxsutawney area. Bud Jr. retired in
1991 at which time his sons Thomas A. Dunkel (secretary) and Douglas B. Dunkel (president) purchased the business and incorporated. In 1989 Bud’s
third son Kevin L. Dunkel settled in to the business, now employed as an estimator. The three brothers now work together as fourth generation roofers.
